PETALING JAYA: A sound education is the foundation for Malaysians to compete globally – this has been the motto upheld by courier services company GD Express.
Its executive director (courier division) Yong Phie Loong said that, based on that belief, the company had come out strongly in support of education initiatives, including the setting up of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar).

To show its commitment, the company chipped in RM15,000 to buy a Shantung Silk table at the KL Fashion Gala Dinner scheduled to be held at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur on Aug 19.

The dinner is the highlight of the inaugural KL Fashion Week 2003 organised by The Star and presented by L’Oreal to raise funds for Utar, apart from promoting the Malaysian capital as a fashion centre.

“We are confident that Utar will open doors for more people to obtain quality education and allow future generations to compete in the global economy,” said Yong, adding that GD Express understood the importance of “internationalisation” as its survival depended on both domestic and foreign markets.

As a token of appreciation to the company for supporting the gala dinner, Star Publications (M) Bhd senior manager (human resources and administration) S.M. Rajah presented a plaque containing a miniature qi pao (cheongsam) to Yong here yesterday.

With the theme Style and Sensuality, the dinner’s guest-of-honour will be Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood, wife of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Highlights of the dinner include a performance by 20 models specially flown in from Dalian, China, and a fashion show by internationally renowned Malaysian designers such as New York-based Zang Toi and London-based Justin Oh.

Other programmes include showcases by local designers such as Sarimah Adzrina, and exhibitions of nyonya kebayas by Butik Ang Eng and matching menswear by Key Ng.

In addition, there will be a showcase of an exclusive collection of qi pao themed “Now and Then” by Dalian-based designer Wu Guobin.

Tables for the gala dinner are available and priced at RM15,000 for the Shantung Silk, RM12,000 for the Chiffon and RM9,000 for the Organza.
